THE 411 ON SUNSCREEN

I’m often asked by patients about the possible harmful effects of sunscreen. What the news doesn’t tell you is that the studies that showed absorption of sunscreen were done on a very small group of people that were applying sunscreen every 4 hours to 75% of their body surface every day for a week.  WHO DOES THAT????  What they also don’t say is that, yes, there was some of the chemicals detected in their blood and urine, but they DO NOT KNOW if the presence of this chemical is actually harmful. What we DO KNOW is that UV radiation from the sun does cause skin cancer and premature aging. If you are still weary, just use mineral sunscreens contains ZINC and/or TITANIUM, which the FDA has determined as safe and effective.
